Today's Question: Do you enjoy true crime stories? If so, what is one of your favorites?

In the nonfiction tradition of John Berendt ("Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil") and Erik Larson ("The Devil in the White City"), New York Times bestselling author Douglas Preston presents a gripping account of crime and punishment in the lush hills surrounding Florence, Italy. In 2000, Douglas Preston fulfilled a dream to move his family to Italy. Then he discovered that the olive grove in front of their 14th century farmhouse had been the scene of the most infamous double-murders in Italian history, committed by a serial killer known as the Monster of Florence. Preston, intrigued, meets Italian investigative journalist Mario Spezi to learn more. This is the true story of their search for--and identification of--the man they believe committed the crimes, and their chilling interview with him. And then, in a strange twist of fate, Preston and Spezi themselves become targets of the police investigation. Preston has his phone tapped, is interrogated, and told to leave the country. Spezi fares worse: he is thrown into Italy's grim Capanne prison, accused of being the Monster of Florence himself. Like one of Preston's thrillers, The Monster Of Florence, tells a remarkable and harrowing story involving murder, mutilation, and suicide-and at the center of it, Preston and Spezi, caught in a bizarre prosecutorial vendetta.

I am not a big fan of crime novels, I prefer romance/love stories, so I do not have a favorite crime novel.

In my late teens I went through a true crime phase. I think my favorite was The Stranger Beside Me - it was about Ted Bundy. milou2ster(at)gmail.com

  3. I'm not terribly familiar with true crime stories, but I actually love the two authors you mentioned. I went to college about 50 miles from Savannah, right around the time Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was being turned into a movie. My friends and I used to drive their on weekends and check out the houses Berendt had written about in the novel. I like City of Falling Angels even more, and I'm dying to visit Venice. Erik Larson actually made me pity a murderer in Thunderstruck, which is a pretty amazing feat. I'll definitely have to check out Preston's novel.

  4. I do like true crime stories but I haven't read too many of them. I would have to pick Devil in the White City (also by Erik Larson who Jessi mentions), which is about the World Fair in Chicago in the late 1800s and how at the same time all that was happening there was a serial killer on the loose. It was great!

  5. I read If You Really Loved Me by Ann Rule one time, and it was one of those books (probably because it was true) that haunted me for a long time. Creepy. Strange. Twisted. So, yeah...loved it!

I've been wanting to read The Monster of Florence for the same reasons!

  7. I enjoy true crime stories more if they are historical, or if they take place far from me. I don't like reading about crimes against women, and reading about something that happened in my hometown would freak me out. I'm just a little wimpy that way.

  16. I picked up Devil in the White City a few years ago but haven't read it!

When I was younger we toured a local home where a murder took place and I read the unauthorized book about it. Totally spooked me out!

    Great answers everyone!
