“What’s the worst ‘best’ book you’ve ever read — the one everyone says is so great, but you can’t figure out why?”
I think I've used this answer before for something else but it really fits for this one, The Lovely Bones, I hated HATED that book!
How about yourself?
I know I'm going to get grief for this b/c people have manic feelings about the book, but I really, really hated Catcher in the Rye *ducks to avoid things thrown at her head*
ReplyDeleteDaughter of Fortune Isabella Allende.
ReplyDeleteI think that I may get even more grief, it's The Giver for me. I didn't dislike it (so maybe it doesn't quite fit in this category) but I just don't get the hype. I've read it twice now and still think it's just meh.
ReplyDeleteCasey
ohhh it is...Tantalize...arggg reading that book was painful.
ReplyDeleteOh, I agree with The Lovely Bones-I HATED that book!
ReplyDeleteI also did not enjoy, wait for it...Twilight. I know I am like the only one-right?
Oooh...I ditto the Giver. And jeez, Criss Cross....agh!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh. I disagree with most of the titles posted here!
ReplyDeleteI LOVED The Lovely Bones.
I LOVED The Giver. Lois Lowry is my MOST favorite author.
I LOVED Twilight.
The Catcher in the Rye...how do you hate that book?!?
I didn't like The Host by Stephenie Meyer.
Most recently it was Evermore by Alyson Noel, but I didn't hate it, it just didn't impress me much.
Oh wells. Can't please everyone now can we?
I loved the Lovely Bones! But god, I hated The Red Tent and 1,000 White Women. I think 1,000 White Women is one of the worst books I've ever read and I've had to read it for two different book clubs. Brutal.
ReplyDeleteLife of Pi
ReplyDeleteMm AGREED. The Lovely Bones confused the f*** out of me. I put it down and was like, huh? What did I just put myself through?!
ReplyDeleteYes! Life of Pi was terribad! I could NOT finish that book!
ReplyDeleteI can't say I hated The Lovely Bones, but I did wish I'd never read it. It kinda freaked me out.
ReplyDeleteDon't kill me... I hated Blood and Chocolate. This is especially weird because I usually love paranormal books, no matter how cheesy or badly written they are.
ReplyDeleteI agree about Criss Cross. That book was just boring.
Animal Farm and Heart of Darkness for the classic types. I actually read Animal Farm twice trying to get what was so great about it!
ReplyDeleteIdentical by Ellen Hopkins for genre fiction. I see so much hype and love for Hopkins' books but I didn't get it. It was sick, twisted, and too disturbing to finish.
I liked---didn't love, but liked---The Lovely Bones, but I only made it 10 pages into Sebold's next one, The Almost Moon, before I hurled it at the wall. Seriously, it was bad.
ReplyDeleteFor my BTT, I ranted about Twilight (again).
I liked about the first half of the Lovely Bones. And then it fell apart.
ReplyDeleteWasn't crazy about The Lovely Bones either. If I Stay is 1000 times better in my opinion!
ReplyDeleteGee, I loved Twilight and The red tent...I think I would have to say Life of Pi.
ReplyDeleteA good friend of mine lent me The Lovely Bones and told me I had to read it. It didn't do anything for me.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Sebold's next book was just terrible! I couldn't get into it either and so it sits on my bookshelf collecting unwanted dust.
ReplyDeleteI loved The Lovely Bones! I thought it was fantastic, devastating, but fantastic.
ReplyDeleteThe Great Gatsby *shudders* I don't know if it's still forced on high school students like when I had to read it, but I think it should be banned.
ReplyDeleteI'm tempted to say The Historian but I really can't since I couldn't finish it.
ReplyDeleteI will probably catch flack for this but I coundn't stand To Kill A Mockingbird. I loved the movie with Gregory peck, but I really didn't like the book at all.
ReplyDeleteOMG, Alea, you have the best followers ever!
ReplyDeleteI COULD NOT STAND Lovely Bones. I also do not like Catcher in the Rye OR the middle two Twilight books (New Moon & Eclipse) OR To Kill a Mockingbird. But I REALLY hated Lovely Bones. HATED.
the lovely bones is GOOD! i think you're just crazy. :P
ReplyDeleteJonathan Franzen's "The Corrections."
ReplyDeleteI agree I hated the Lovely Bones. I also hate The Outsiders and My Sisters Keeper
ReplyDeleteThis was a great question wasn't it! Thanks to everyone for the entertaining conversation!
