Hardcover vs. Paperback 47

The Order of Odd Fish by James Kennedy

Hardcover

Paperback

Amazon.com:

JO LAROUCHE HAS lived her 13 years in the California desert with her Aunt Lily, ever since she was dropped on Lily’s doorstep with this note: This is Jo. Please take care of her. But beware. This is a dangerous baby. At Lily’s annual Christmas costume party, a variety of strange events take place that lead Jo and Lily out of California forever—and into the mysterious, strange, fantastical world of Eldritch City. There, Jo learns the scandalous truth about who she is, and she and Lily join the Order of Odd-Fish, a collection of knights who research useless information. Glamorous cockroach butlers, pointless quests, obsolete weapons, and bizarre festivals fill their days, but two villains are controlling their fate. Jo is inching closer and closer to the day when her destiny is fulfilled, and no one in Eldritch City will ever be the same.

While the hardcover is semi-interesting I like the paperback about an INFINITY times more. That illustration style just stops me dead in my tracks, combined with a beautiful color palette and you've got yourself a beautiful piece of artwork right there. While the hardcover maybe hints at an adventure a little more I don't even care this time, I'm in love with the paperback!

Definitely the paperback this time around. No contest for me. At all.

  3. Paperback is definitely better than hardcover. I honestly don't even think I would stop to pick it up if I saw it at the bookstore.

  5. I find the hardcover a little too busy for my tastes. Definitely like the paperback more!

  6. I love both covers. I'm also the author! I count myself very lucky to have been the beneficiary of two outstanding artists, each with his own vivid style.

Paul Hornschemeier, the artist behind the paperback, happens to be a friend of mine. (He designed my wedding invitation!) I talk about him on my blog here. He's the author of some fantastic graphic novels, including Mother Come Home, The Three Paradoxes, and the forthcoming Life With Mr. Dangerous.

I'm delighted with both Paul's and John Meyer's (hardback) covers.

  7. I usually prefer the much more muted tones colors but I have to admit the top image draws me in more. I think I'd be more inclined to at least pick it up and see what it is about. The other just kinda blends in (though still beautiful in its own right).

  8. Paperback here! I love it -- colors and style. The hardcover isn't bad, but the paperback captures my attention.

  9. James-

Thanks for stopping by! You've just answered the mystery to way I'm basically obsessed with the paperback cover! I love Paul's illustration style, I think so far I've only read one of his graphic novels but his illustration style is so refined, I love it!

  12. I think I have to say hardcover for this one.

Also, people who research useless information are my kind of people!
