The Island by Victoria Hislop
Oh boy these are a lot alike, photo, text in a color block, landscape. I really love the blue in Stars in the Night and the landscape photo used. But overall I think they both look nice.
Thanks to Deborah for pointing out this lookalike!

I agree that they both look nice, but something about Stars in the Night just appeals to me more.
ReplyDeleteThis two really look alike. I love the first one a bit more.
ReplyDeleteI like them both, too. I'm surprised by how similarly the pictures were used!
ReplyDeleteI think I like Stars in the Night better because I am loving teal/cobalt blueish colors right now.
ReplyDeleteI like Stars better, maybe due to the desaturation in the first one and then the bright rocks?
ReplyDeleteI love the top one more. It's just so much prettier and colorful, it pops!
ReplyDeleteI think I like the sharpness of the top one more, but I do like them both.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely the first. The color saturation is waaay more eyecatching!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely Stars in the Night.
ReplyDeleteWow ... I don't understand how so many books end up with the same photographs. It seems there should be a big, book catalog where, once a cover is used, people post that cover so other people know either (a) not to use it, or (b) to at least change it up a little more.
Don't get me wrong: lots of these similar covers are beautiful, but if I ever (fingers crossed) get published, I'd want my book to have a cover that was its own.
Hey, I'm the author of Stars. Thanks for highlighting it. The publisher and I were surprised when days before it went to the printer someone emailed me the lookalike cover. We had no idea! But I have to say the top photo/model is perfect for my book. And I would mind if Stars became an international bestseller, too.
ReplyDeleteAnd my understanding is that the lookalikes occur because publishers don't invest the much higher fee to buy a photo that can never be used again. But I could be wrong.
Hi Cara-
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by! Yes I think you are right there probably are ways to get exclusive rights on images, aside from hiring a photographer to shoot something special.
