Hardcover vs Paperback 107

Hate List by Jennifer Brown

Hardcover

Paperback

Amazon.com:

Five months ago, Valerie Leftman's boyfriend, Nick, opened fire on their school cafeteria. Shot trying to stop him, Valerie inadvertently saved the life of a classmate, but was implicated in the shootings because of the list she helped create. A list of people and things she and Nick hated. The list he used to pick his targets.

Now, after a summer of seclusion, Val is forced to confront her guilt as she returns to school to complete her senior year. Haunted by the memory of the boyfriend she still loves and navigating rocky relationships with her family, former friends and the girl whose life she saved, Val must come to grips with the tragedy that took place and her role in it, in order to make amends and move on with her life.

The hardcover image on this book is one of those classic images that just is right and for me, something that would be very hard to forget and sorry but I'm going to get a bit sassy here for a second, all I can say about the paperback is "Hey paperback, 1997 called and it wants its everything back" what happened here? I do not like this regression.

Thanks to Irish who pointed out this H vs P!

  2. What I really loved about the hard cover was the ambiguity of the face. It is neither male nor female, and even thought he narrator of the book is Valerie, Nick is just as important, too. The paperback is not only dated, but places too much importance on Nick. And I miss that ambiguity! Also pink and green don't shout "Hate List" to me. The image would clearly be considered a before picture, when really what is important for the book is the after. UGH. Did they even read the book?

I like the hardcover better. The paperback isn't nearly as strong.

  7. I hate both covers, but I think the paperback looks ridiculous for the premise of the story.

  8. Love this book and I'm so torn about which cover I prefer. I think the retro of the hardcover is amazing and it also has a pretty ominous feeling to it. A darker vibe that suits some of the subject matter.
