Hardcover vs Paperback 109

The Christmas Cookie Club by Ann Pearlman

Hardcover

Paperback

Every year at Christmastime, Marnie and her twelve closest girlfriends gather in the evening with batches of beautifully wrapped homemade cookies. Everyone has to bring a dessert and a bottle of wine, but this year, it’s their stories that are especially important. Marnie’s oldest daughter has a risky pregnancy. Jeannie’s father is having an affair with her best friend. Taylor’s life is in financial freefall. Rosie’s husband doesn’t want children, and she has to decide, very soon, the fate of her marriage.
On this evening, at least, they can feel as a group the impulses of sisterly love and conflict, the passion and hopefulness of a new romance, the betrayal and disillusionment some relationships bring, the joys and fears of motherhood, the agony of losing a child, and above all, the love they have for one another. As Marnie says, the Christmas Cookie Club, if it’s anything, is a reminder of delight.

It is my opinion, that if a book is called The Christmas Cookie Club, there should be some cookies on the cover! So I think I'll have to stick with the hardcover. Beyond that point the paperback is nice if not a bit generic.

  3. I do prefer the first cover, but the book is really more about friendship than cookies, so I can see where they're coming from with the second one.

I prefer the hardcover and think it conveys the title the best. After having read the summary however, I sense that the book is a lot more serious in tone than the hardcover showcases. Soooo... I pick paperback as it seems as a whole, to fit the story better. :)

  10. I think the hardcover is infinitely better in every way. The paperback is washed out and generic and doesn't stand out. The concept behind it is nice and appealing, but isn't different. The hardcover is very vibrant without being obnoxious and has a very cute design and layout. Plus, it's different from everything I've seen before and goes with the title.

I like this hardcover vs paperback post.

  11. I completely agree! The paperback is nice but the hardcover suits the title much more. Having read the book though, there's so much about friendship and relationships that I feel the paperback tell a lot on the story, too.
