The Guernesey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society CBS.com Novel Adventures Giveaway!

Day 8 of CBS.com's Novel Adventures Giveaway!

Today's Question: Do you particularly enjoy books from a certain time period? If so, what is your favorite time period to read about?

From Amazon.com:

“ I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers.” January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb….

As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends—and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society—born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island—boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all.

Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society’s members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever.

Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises, and of finding connection in the most surprising ways.

  1. I love World War I era books—not the war scenes, but the domestic ones, in the US or in London. I love, too, the late 19th century, when the characters are written into an alive and active place.

  3. I seem to like books set in World War II, like Beth said not for the war scenes but how people coped with everything, the raw emotions and how they went on afterwards.

  6. I love historicals. Anything from the 1950s and earlier, I love. Well, maybe stopping somewhere around the 1600s or 1700s. So I guess 1750-1950 will be my official answer. :P

  8. I'm not so picky on the era. A sure sign of a booknerd!
But I do love most anything with historical truth to it.
    Love the 1800's.

  9. I know this is weird, but I like books set during the plague - or more generally, the middle ages.

  10. I tend to read a lot about Victorian England and I really like the golden era of Egyptian archaeology. Really though I will read most anything that isn't modern. It's strange!

  11. I don't really like a certain time period...I don't know. WW2 time is kind of cool to read about...that or the late 1800's..

  12. I wasn't that interested in historical fiction in the past except Little House on the Prairie books when I was a kid but lately I've been reading some really good books that take place during WWI and WWII. I had no idea about the details of the internment camps we had in the US. I learned so much about what those people went through. Thanks for this contest.

  13. I'm definitely in for this one. In response to the question, I enjoy books about Tudor England, though I think I have read a little too much on the time period at this point!

  14. I really like books that go back and forth between the present day and one or two time periods in the past. For some reason, the interweaving of present and past just gets me turning the pages every time :)

I actually like books that are set in the present -- I like a lot of different types of books -- romance, mystery, paranormal, Christian, etc. But I enjoy books from different time periods sometimes also!

I have certain time periods I like best, my favorite is the 1500s to the 1800s. I love to read about those, I love other books that aren't in those time periods and are still really good. I just prefer the 1500s and 1800s.

  23. I love to read historical fiction, but I'm pretty flexible about the time period. I like getting sucked in to another time period- whether it's last year or 300 years ago.

I don't have any preference on time periods actually. I enjoy a mix of everything.

  27. Yes. Other than books set in modern times or the future, I love to read books set in Victorian England. Especially if magic is involved (like the Gemma Doyle Trilogy).

  28. Victorian times are particularly fascinating, and the wild west. Books like "The Crimson Petal and the White" And "Lonesome Dove" pretty much sum up my obsession with two very different time periods and cultures.

It's not a specific time period per se, but I really like to read "current/contemporary" novels about 10 years after they were published, just to see how dated they get. I'm really looking forward to reading e. A Novel by Matt Beaumont in 2010!! :)

  31. No I don't have a specific time period I like. I do enjoy historical's (fiction, romance, mystery, etc.) set in the early 1900s though.

  32. I think my favorite time period to read about is the 1950s! I love how everything changed during that time - the war was over, and there was such a huge jump in technology. I love reading about people's lives - coming to terms with the ones lost in the war and learning how to live in peacetime and prosperity.
