Hardcover vs. Paperback 13

My Most Excellent Year by Steve Kluger

Hardcover

Paperback

Dear Anthony:
I appreciate your recent interest, but I’m not accepting applications at this time. Your letter will be kept in our files and someone will get back to you if there is an opening. Thank you for thinking of me.
Respectfully,
Alejandra Perez
P.S. It’s not “Allie.” It’s “Ale.”

Meet T.C., who is valiantly attempting to get Alejandra to fall in love with him; Alejandra, who is playing hard to get and is busy trying to sashay out from under the responsibilities of being a diplomat’s daughter; and T.C.’s brother Augie, who is gay and in love and everyone knows it but him.

I first saw the paperback cover when Reviewer X posted it along with her review. I definitely like it more, less sports and more people. I like how for the most part all the elements are maintained but wish the sparkles were added onto the paperback like on the hardcover.

Hardcover or Paperback?

  1. Hardback! I don't like how the umbrella covers their faces on the paperback. The hardback seems more sleek as well.

  2. I quite like the hardback, but I can see why you prefer the paperback. The only thing I don't like about the HB is the baseball. If the faces weren't covered on the PB, I'd probably like that one better.

  3. I am with Elle and P.Girl, I like the simpler Hardback option. I like the cleaner appearance of it and I rebel against the notion that books must have people on the cover.

  4. No, no, no people under an umbrella with heads cut off, no!

  5. Hmm, I have to say I don't really like either cover. But I would probably prefer the paperback if their faces were uncovered. Does the umbrella mean something important in terms of the story?

  6. I liked the hardcover. It's nice and simple.

  7. I'm digging the hardcover as well. Book sounds interesting too (=

  8. I'd have to go with the hardbook. There are just too many YA covers with hidden faces out there, and this one's not even that attractive.

  9. Neither cover calls to me, but if I had to choose, it'd be the simpler hardback version. The headless people version is a turnoff.

  10. Paperback! It makes me interested in the book. The hardcover makes me think it's about sports.

  11. I like the hardback much better! There is something awkward about the faces being cut off on the paperback

  13. I prefer the hardback--its image is more streamlined (except for the lavender stars falling from the umbrella--not sure what to think about that) and unexpected, replacing the umbrella handle with a baseball bat. The three people are too cluttered--and, like others have said, I'm a little bugged by their lack of faces. (The headless mannequins in dept stores used to freak me out, too.)

In all honesty, though, neither cover would lead to me picking up the book in a store.

  14. I really don't like either cover honestly, but I like the sparkles

  15. Hardback.. More sporty. :)

  16. I'm not even sure why but the hardcover really stands out for me. I think I'd pick it up just because I'd be curious about why there is a baseball bat under the umbrella. lol.

  17. Hardcover. I like the font for the title and the umbrella w/o headless people.

I like the hardcover much better. I don't like having the umbrella covering up the people's face or the fact that the umbrella is not proportional to the heads. :P

  19. I like the hardcover. The paperback looks too much like a children's book.

  20. Both are cool but I don't like how the faces are cut off in the paperback.

  21. I don't really care for either one, but I find the hardback more likable.

I love that you do this post-it's a great idea!

  22. I prefer the hardcover! I really like how simple it is... and the font is pretty!

  23. Based on the subtitle, I like the hardcover best!

Love the hardcover, and completely agree with all the people who are severely anti-teens-with-no-face-on-books.

  25. I think this is the first time when the vote really really really swings one way! It is true though, the cut off head bit is getting a little over used!

Charley- I'm not sure if the umbrella is important besides the reference to Mary Poppins in the subtitle, I'm waiting to get the paperback when it comes out!
