Amazon.com: As if trying to fit in at a new school isn't stressful enough, sixteen-year-old Nikki Donovan just found out that her long-lost father is, in fact, the demon king of the Shadowlands—the world that separates and protects us from the Underworld. When she is brought there by the mysterious—and surprisingly cute—messenger Michael, she learns that her father is dying, and he wants her to assume the throne. To complicate matters, a war is brewing between the Shadowlands and the Underworld, her half-demon qualities are manifesting, and her growing feelings for Michael are completely forbidden. Ruling a kingdom, navigating a secret crush, and still making it home by curfew—what's a teenage demon princess to do?
For the longest time I was rather unsure about books with supernatural elements, I've only dipped my toes in from time to time. But I'm pretty sure I'm becoming a real fan finally. I think Demon Princess along with a few other books have convinced me it might be time to drop that fear of mine. Seriously, I never thought I would love reading about demons so much!
If I'm being honest, I kind of feared that Nikki might come off as a ditz and sort of annoy me, but she was nothing like that! She was a really sweet, caring, and a funny character, and oh she makes a kick ass Darkling (half demon)! I adored her and am so happy that this is the beginning of the series. I can't wait to hear more from Nikki. And speaking of characters, did I ever love Michael the messenger sent from the Shadowlands to bring Nikki to her father, the Demon King. He was so so so so so sweet, I loved this boy! I wished I could reach into the book and give him a hug, even though he doesn't want to be touched! I also really liked Nikki's parents, her mother the romance novel writer, who's been married 4 times trying to find the love that was lost when Nikki's father vanished and Nikki's father the Demon King, who would expect a Demon King to be so sweet, well he is, really!
I sort of figured out all the twists and turns just a little before Nikki and it was a lot of fun seeing it all play out and now I'm having fun thinking of all the things that could happen in the next book in beyond. Thankfully our wait isn't very long, it looks like Book 2: Reign Check is coming on in Spring of 2010!
Demon Princess: Reign or Shine is released September 29th 2009.
