Why the Sky Is Blue by Susan Meissner
I love the saturation in Field Guide so that will be my pick. So the question is was the barn added in or taken out? My money is on taken out.
Which do you prefer?
Thanks to Deborah for pointing out this lookalike!

This is hard choice, because I think I prefer where the barn is taken out, but I hate it when they don't do any sort of treatment for the font and it just... sits there. Plus when you look at it, knowing the barn WAS there, they did a kind of crappy job taking the barn out :/ And to be honest, I don't really prefer the photo in general. Can I pick neither?! Haha How about: I prefer the photo without the barn, but the font treatment on the one with it?! Haha
ReplyDeleteOh I like the second!
ReplyDeleteI think overall I like the second one more. I'm with Anna though, I don't really like either one. And the barn was for sure taken out.
ReplyDeleteHow does this keep happening? Publishers need to buy the more expensive exclusive rights for a picture.
ReplyDeleteLenore, it's because it's cheap, honestly. You can get a good stock photo for around $8-12, but if you want exclusive rights, it might end up costing more than the advance the publisher gave the author! Exclusive rights can be very expensive - and in many cases while you can buy printing rights from stock sites, very rarely do they sell the actual EXCLUSIVE you're-the-only-one-who-has-this-photo rights. And even if they DID, there will still be people BEFORE that person who bought it that they can't very well take the rights away from!
ReplyDeleteI like Field Guide too. I think the barn was taken out because the trees are gone too.
ReplyDeleteI prefer the first one mainly because I like the bright colours and the close up shot of the photo. :)
ReplyDeleteI like the Field Guide cover better, too.
ReplyDeleteI think the barn was taken out -- andI like the second cover better.
ReplyDeleteAnna - We used to buy image rights all the time for ad campaigns, so I am no stranger to stock photos. It seems there are so many of them, so it boggles my mind that they keep picking the exact same photos.
ReplyDeleteLenore- I guess there are only so many good ones out there or people just have the same taste lol. I know on I Stock you can see how many people have downloaded a photo or even if it's "hot" right now. Not that doesn't change as time goes by. It is an interesting question though, why the same ones over and over! :)
ReplyDeleteI like the first one because the colors are more vivid.
ReplyDeleteI like the first because of the colors too, Alea. I agree with Anna about the barn being taken out a little sloppily, but I can forget it was there, and then it doesn't bother me.
