Help! Or Something I Know Almost Nothing About: Vampires

With True Blood Season 3 starting vampires are BACK (yes I know they really didn't go anywhere... but back for me)! A friend mentioned she's really getting into vampire books and specifically vampire series. So far she's loved Twilight and the Sookie Stackhouse series.

I want to offer her some suggestions as to what to try next but I thought I would ask those who knew best first, you! What vampire series and other fantasy type series, which a bit of romance would you suggest, and what would you suggest staying away from? Thanks in advance for your help!

  2. Those two are the best of what I have read! I have heard there are a lot of fans of the Anita Blake vampire books. I understand those are quite a bit racy, so I haven't read them yet. Good luck with the hunt!!

  4. I detest Laurell K. Hamilton. After 6 books of all sex and no plot, I was over it. And there are like 20+ books or something in Anita Blake. Boo. lol. I did like her fae series, Merry Gentry, but same formula. 80%, 20% plot, but at least sex has a purpose in that series.

    Vampires FTW!
My favs: lack Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward, Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost, Dark-Hunter/Were-Hunter/Dream-Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, The Morganville Vampire series by Rachel Caine. The Hollows series by Kim Harrison has vampires in it, but the main character is a witch. Honestly though, it's some of the best UF you can find, in my opinion. :)

    Happy reading!

  5. These are great you guys! I mentioned Vampire Academy but after that I was sort of clueless. She's going to love this I hope!

  6. Definitely Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead and The Morganville Vampires books by Rachel Caine. Also the Vampire Diaries by LJ Smith is good too! :)

  7. I agree with Vampire Academy - it has action and some romance and is well written. Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine is also good, the characters are college age, but it's definitely a YA series.

  8. I'm not a huge paranormal reader, but I loved Maggie Steifvater's "Shiver" and "Linger." It's not vampires, but werewolves, and there's romance :)

  9. I'm reading the Blue Bloods series by Melissa De La Cruz and I am absolutely loving it so that series gets my vote! =)

  10. Anita Blake is erotica so it depends on age for that one...

Rachel Caine, definitely. LOVE the Morganville Vampire series, they're my favorite.

There's Melissa de la Cruz's series which I haven't read.

Blood Ties series by Jennifer Armintrout which is, like Holly said, pretty racy.

    Oh, here we go.

    Vampire Kisses by Ellen Shreiber
    Vampire High by Douglas Rees
Prom Nights From Hell by Meg
The Principal by M. C. Sumner
    The Substitute -//-
The Coach -//- (Old series, but spooky I think.)
Goodnight Kiss by R. L. Stine
Goodnight Kiss 2 -//- (Think they recently re-released these.)
The Cheerleader by Caroline B. Cooney
The Return of the Vampire, -//-
    The Vampire’s Promise, -//-
(Released as a trilogy called The Vampire’s Promise. The first was called Deadly Offer, the second Evil Returns, and the third Fatal Bargain.)
The Vampire Diaries by L. J. Smith
    Sunshine by Robin McKinley
    Lynsay Sands series (romance)
    Kerrilyn Sparks (romance)
Amelia Atwater Rhodes books (love her)
    House of Night series.
Ummmm I think I'm out now XD

  14. Wow, coming here is like seeing a wish list of books. I have to say I have nothing to add to the list.

  15. I love like almost all vampire books I read. I enjoyed the Blue Bloods...kind of like like vamps meet gossip girl. :)

  16. She can't go wrong with the Night Huntress series (Jeaniene Frost), Chicagoland Vampires series (Chloe Neill), Vampire Academy series (Richelle Mead) or the Morganville Vampires series (Rachel Caine).

Great series with other paranormal MCs but featuring vamps: Patricia Brigg's Mercy Thompson series, Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series, and Kim Harrison's The Hollows/Rachel Morgan series.

Those are all urban fantasy w/ romantic elements. For straight paranormal romance The Black Dagger Brotherhood (J.R. Ward) is full of vampire heroes and Immortals After Dark (Kresley Cole) has several vamp heroes and a half-vamp heroine. Gena Showalter's Alien Huntress series as a variety of different paranormal elements, but she recently wrote a vampire heroine in Seduce the Darkness (it can be read as a standalone).

  17. I really loved Sucks to Be Me and Still Sucks to be Me by Kimberley Pauley

  18. VAMPIRE ACADEMY by Richelle Mead
    NIGHT HUNTRESS by Jeanine Frost
THE MORGANVILLE SERIES by Rachel Caine
    CHICAGOLAND VAMPIRES by Chloe Neill

No House of Night. I wouldn't even recommend those to an enemy.

  19. This is a repeat but The Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost is fantastic. I’m picky with my vamps. The Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs is also good. The focus is more on werewolves but there is some vampire action as well.

  20. You must must must suggest Jeri Smith-Ready's adult vampire series, first one's WICKED GAME. It is excellent!

  22. The Morganville Vampires series by Rachel Caine is pretty good as well as The House of Night by P.C Cast...i dont really consider 'twilight' as having anything to do with vampires- it was just too off the radar and too eratic- the twilight 'vampires' where if since i'm being honest more like fearies. i really like fearies and find them interesting so those which i am referring to don't have diddly squat to do with tinkerbelle. (oh crap i'm babaling sorry) Vampire Kisses by Ellen Screiber is a very comical series with an interesting take on goths, vamps, and all things strange. The Vampire Diaries series and the Night World series by LJ Smith are both great. As for newer vampire novels, i really enjoyed Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark-Side by Beth Fantaskey, as well as the first book of Dark Cronicles, Hearts at Stake by Alyxandra Harvey. One that simply MUST be read is Bite Me by Christopher More. Some upcomming vampire books that i enjoyed and would recommend are Fat Vampire by Adam Rex and also an upcomming author of a vampire series to look out for is Kaiden Blake. ^^ i hope that helps sorry for my response being so long.

  23. If you detest the phrase "milking it for all it's worth" and all examples of that, stay far FAR away from The House of Night series.
