Booking Through Thursday: Library Week

I saw that National Library week is coming up in April, and that led to some questions. How often do you use your public library and how do you use it? Has the coffeehouse/bookstore replaced the library? Did you go to the library as a child? Do you have any particular memories of the library? Do you like sleek, modern, active libraries or the older, darker, quiet, cozy libraries?

I used to use the public library very very often, but in the last 2 or so years I use it not as often. And that is because of the amount of TBR books I now have of my own! I'd always read the library books and not my own! But then that leads to me buying more books I could just get from the library. It's basically a big mess! BUT, I do go to the library once a week to browse the Friends of the Library Bookstore, lots of great deals to be had there.

I guess when I go to a coffeehouse/bookstore I don't really stay there, I get what I need and go. So no way has it replaced the library!

I went to the library constantly as I child, in the summer I'd bring home a stack of chapter books and just read them like THAT. I also discovered the gloriousness that is reserving books online, really before we had the internet lol! It was some weird program, and you had to use keyboard shortcuts, no mouse! I'd reserve and reserve like crazy and pick up huge stacks! I don't really have particular memories, apparently one time a librarian yelled at me, not sure why, maybe I was talking, how rude!

There is no specific type of library I like, I've been to all sorts and they all have something great to offer!

Let's hear some of your library memories!

  1. I really need to cut down on library books and focus solely on my own because I have so many, but it's so hard!

  2. I used the library tons when I was a kid. It's slowly tapered off since then. I rarely use it now. I think I've checked out 1 book for fun (the rest are for school projects) in the last 4 years. lol

  3. How often do you use your public library

It's like Cheers when I walk in. lol Some weeks, I'm there 2-3 times a week. Throughout the year, at least once a week. I kept remember the last time I went longer than two weeks without a visit in the last two years.

Has the coffeehouse/bookstore replaced the library?

No, it's the other way around. The library replaced the coffeehouse/bookstore. As my level of discretionary funds changed so did my social habits. I also outgrew open mic nights and most commercial bookstores cater to latest releases and my reading habits are influenced by pub dates but my current interests.

Did you go to the library as a child? Do you have any particular memories of the library?

We did not go often as children. My mother instead always gave us book money for scholastic and the like. I do remember the libraries in my schools and I loved them. I thought they were peaceful, lovely spaces.

I love all libraries. When I travel, I visit libraries the same way a tourist would visit a museum. I love old college libraries. I loved doing my homework in the library while in college even when I didn't need anything from the library.

  5. All through my school years, I was in the library at least once a week. I practically lived in it.

Now that I'm in Frankfurt, I go every couple of months.

  7. I love libraries. I volunteer at the public library in my area, and it's a lot of fun. Every time I go back to the YA section, I want to take tons of books home with me.

  8. Libraries are simply wonderful. I'd be lost without mine. Although, I don't browse as much as I used to do in the past. I reserve my books online and pick them up. My boys love the library though and have their favorite shelves and sections!

  9. I like the library as well but limit myself to reading one library book a week so I get my review/TBR books done!
