Hardcover vs. Paperback 42

The Market by J.M. Steele

Hardcover

Paperback

Amazon.com:

High school senior Kate Winthrop is about to find out just how much she's worth.
After stumbling across the Millbank Social Stock Market, Kate is horrified to discover that out of the 140 girls in her class, she's ranked a bleak 71. Sure, she's not drop-dead gorgeous, and her "fashion" choices leave a bit to be desired...but 71?! Determined not to accept her fate as a "junk bond," she and her best friends quickly set out to make her the fastest rising stock on the Market.

Armed with a sexy new haircut and killer wardrobe, Kate puts her plan into effect -- and the analysts take note. In a matter of weeks, her stock value soars, and "Blue Chip" status is within reach. But what begins as a fun social experiment quickly turns into an obsession, one that threatens to ruin her reputation, friendships, and a chance at first love. Will Kate survive the highs and lows of the Market, or will her security crash and burn?

This is a hard one, it's hard because it's such a specific plot. I admire how to designer(s) used the idea of ranking and numbers in both of the covers. I feel like the hardcover is too anonymous and the paperback is too specific. So I don't know how I feel really. Just looking at them I like the paperback better but it seems almost too playful for the blurb. What do you think?

Hardcover or Paperback?

  1. I have to agree with you on this one. Visually, I like the paperback better, but it doesn't really fit the blurb. I haven't read the book, so I won't say too much on the subject, but it just seems all playful and stuff and that doesn't really fit in with the blurb.

  2. The paperback has a lot more eye appeal for me.

  3. I prefer the paperback. It sounds like an interesting book.

  4. I like the hardcover, but I don't like the title/author treatment. The paperback is too frivolous and I don't think I'd pick it up.

  5. I like the paperback better because it matches the summary. However, I'd probably pick up the hardcover in the bookstore. So I guess I'm on the fence as well.

  6. Hardcover, It's original and stands out more. The paperback looks to much like a lot already out there on shelves.

  7. I like the paperback edition. The girls look fairly normal and I like the contrast and colors. :)

  8. Alea! I didn't know you followed me! I've now just entered a whole new realm of cool.

I just have to say *again* how much I love the cover comparisons (and other places covers have been used). It's one of the most awesome features I've seen on any blog.

  9. If I saw both covers in store I would most likely pick up the hardback before the paperback.

  10. I feel like neither cover really fits the blurb but I'd choose the paperback over hardback any day. The paperback cover is just so visually interesting.

  11. I'm not sure either! Mainly because I don't know what a Social Stock Market means?! I like the hardcover more though - something about colors and silhouettes - but the paperback may attract more readers?

  12. Ooh I think you said it the best when you said the hardcover is too specific and the paperback too general. This book first caught my attention in hardcover, though. I think I'd still be curious to read it, whichever cover it has!

  15. I would definately pick up the hardcover over the paperback. I agree that the title/author treatment needs work. I admire the fact that they're trying to make it look like a stock market ticker, but the blurring makes it look messy rather than giving the illusion of motion to me.

  18. I definitely have to say the hardcover. The paperback seems run-of-the-mill YA to me...even reminded a bit of old Sweet Valley High or Babysitter's Club covers.

  19. J.T. Oldfield- That would explain why I like it.... I loved those books :P

  20. I am more drawn to the Hardcover version because it is not something that you see on books everywhere. The paperback one goes better with the story but the hardcover one is more eye-catching to me.

  21. I like the hardcover more, it's interesting and the cover makes you guess a lot. But the paperback is nice too, it feels friendly.

  22. Hardcover, definitely. I saw the paperback in the store the other day and was a little disappointed. It's not really original and the composition seems a little weird to me. Unnatural. And the hardcover is clever.

  23. Hardcover! No contest.

  24. Complete tie. Love the hardcover, but I own the paperback and kind of feel loyal to it. I guess I'd have to say...yeah. Tie.
