Hardcover vs Paperback 109

The Christmas Cookie Club by Ann Pearlman

Hardcover

Paperback

Every year at Christmastime, Marnie and her twelve closest girlfriends gather in the evening with batches of beautifully wrapped homemade cookies. Everyone has to bring a dessert and a bottle of wine, but this year, it’s their stories that are especially important. Marnie’s oldest daughter has a risky pregnancy. Jeannie’s father is having an affair with her best friend. Taylor’s life is in financial freefall. Rosie’s husband doesn’t want children, and she has to decide, very soon, the fate of her marriage.
On this evening, at least, they can feel as a group the impulses of sisterly love and conflict, the passion and hopefulness of a new romance, the betrayal and disillusionment some relationships bring, the joys and fears of motherhood, the agony of losing a child, and above all, the love they have for one another. As Marnie says, the Christmas Cookie Club, if it’s anything, is a reminder of delight.

It is my opinion, that if a book is called The Christmas Cookie Club, there should be some cookies on the cover! So I think I'll have to stick with the hardcover. Beyond that point the paperback is nice if not a bit generic.

Lookalikes 128

The Facts of Life by Graham Joyce

Her and Me and You by Lauren Strasnick

I'm in love with the presumed motion in Her and Me and You, it seems a lot more alive than The Facts of Life. Also an umbrella in the snow, I think people should do that more often, winter around here can get pretty wet!

Weekly Dose of Crafts!

Wow I didn't realize I had so much to share this week! But when I looked at Raverly I realized there was A LOT!

This first picture is 4 completed Christmas presents, the brown scarf and green fingerless gloves I had been working on previous weeks and they are now done! The green strange looking thing in the middle is a cowl with an ipod holder from the book CowlGirls which finally arrived last week! It's called Wrapper's Delight! I pretty much did that one in a night, was a lot of fun!

Yarn used:
1 hank of Misti Alpaca Chunky Color 7238

The purple scarf is based on Attic24's Ripple blanket, when I started my blanket a few months ago I noted how cute it would look as a scarf if you just did a few rows so that's what I did!

Yarn used:
Less than 2 skeins of Comfy Bulky Vinca

Yesterday was supposed to be my last sock class but the teacher decided to extend it another week (how nice!) so last night I finished my sock! She suggested we go down to a sport of dk weight for our next pair and talked about how Opal had yarn that looked like animals and then she mentioned a ladybug, and I needed that ladybug yarn so bad! So even though I only have 1 sock done I had to start on a ladybug sock!

Yarn used:
Opal 2749

This hat is another present, I actually finished it Monday and then decided that when I thought it was too long and skipped about inch of work, I was totally wrong so I ripped it back out! The ear flaps will have buttons sewn on and will button to the hat. You can see the pattern here, totally cute! It's a little bigger than I had hoped but hopefully the recipient of it will like it!

Yarn used:
1 skein Red Heart Shimmer Lime

I bet you are wondering what this is, well I actually don't know! Because it's Week 1's portion of the Mystery KAL I'm participating in! I'm so excited for part two! I learned the provisional cast on and used short rows in something other than a sock!

Yarn Used:
Bernat Mosaic Ambrosia

This is the start of another Shades of Plaid scarf for a present. I'm sort of all over the place as you can see so I haven't done much on it.

Yarn used:
Vanna's Choice
Dusty Green
Dusty Purple
Dark Gray Heather

And finally, Sunday I missed 2 awesome yarn sales due to ice causing 300+ accidents before I woke up that morning so I bought this French Press Felted Slippers pattern I had my eye on for awhile. I'm really excited to try felting!

Yarn used:
Patons Classic Wool Jade Heather

The Fool’s Gold Holiday Wishes magazine (with a Pop Culture Junkie Ad inside!)

In the fall I was approached about creating an ad for Pop Culture Junkie for this cool e-magazine for Susan Mallery's Fool's Gold books and I of course said yes! I love how she takes the world in her books from the page to real life with e-magazines and even a website! I've chatted with Susan Mallery on twitter and in person at BEA and she's so sweet! I was able to place my ad for free in exchange for sharing the final product here on my blog! I think it came out pretty cool and it's really fun to see my ad in there, first time I've done anything like this! I'm excited to check out some of the other blog's advertised! Enjoy!

Happy Thanksgiving, Liars. (From A of Pretty Little Liars)

I guess A thinks I did really well last summer in the Pretty Little Liars Secret Keeper's game because she is showering me with gifts, last month Halloween M&Ms and today an Apple Pie for Thanksgiving, yum! I came home and my mom was like I think you got a pie in the mail, and I was like what a PIE???

So I opened the package, the pie came from the Little Pie Company and was still a bit cold which is amazing! It came in a box with freezer padding of some kind around it! I figured there would be some kind of clue like last month and at first I didn't see anything beyond the postcard which said "Time to Turn Up the Heat and See What Secrets Are Revealed. Happy Thanksgiving, Liars. -A" Eventually I noticed what looked like some tape on the front, being me I figured either it was the clue or some kind of error on the postcard that was being covered up, I figured A was too smart for it me, it must be a clue, I rubbed it for awhile thinking it might be heat sensitive but nothing so finally I held it up to a light (thanks Shanyn for confirming something was there!) and it slowly revealed the url ABCFamily.com/GobbleGobble click it to see a new video featuring Emily!

Hardcover vs Paperback 108

You Better Not Cry by Augusten Burroughs

Hardcover

Paperback (in some places, in others it is the same as the Hardcover)

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER about Christmases past and present from the #1 bestselling author of Running with Scissors, Dry, and A Wolf at the Table

At eight years old, Augusten Burroughs profoundly misunderstood the meaning of Christmas. Now proving himself once more "a master of making tragedy funny" (
The Miami Herald), he shows how the holidays can bring out the worst in us and sometimes, just sometimes, the very best. From the author described in USA Today as "one of the most compelling and screamingly funny voices of the new century" comes a book about surviving the holiday we love to hate, and hate to love.

The hardcover is just sort of disconcerting. So I'm glad there is another cover floating around out there even if it's not really anything special.

Welcome to 111 Arthur Avenue (or: A Discussion of The Royal Tenenbaums) by Jordyn of Ten Cent Notes

Some of you may know, my all time favorite movie is Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums. A few months back Jordyn watched it and we got to talking about how fabulous and wonderful and everything in between it is. I asked her if she wanted to share some of that love over on my blog! A girl has got to strive to live up to her blog name, if even just a little!  If you haven't seen The Royal Tenenbaums or Wes's other movies (Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Life Aquatic, The Darjeeling Limited or Fantastic Mr. Fox), well you just really must! Thanks for stopping by Jordyn!

The Royal Tenenbaums is the type of weird, dark-comedy, messed-up-family, slow-moving film that, if you're going to enjoy it at all, you have to pay attention to. This movie demands something of its viewers and in return gives them a beautifully-crafted movie with heartbreaking characters and a dysfunction to spare. From the drug-addicted best friend, the absentee father, to the semi-incestuous love story, there's a lot weird in this movie.

The film opens on a family of child prodigies and then goes on to tell us how their lives have fallen apart since childhood. Business maverick Chas has become neurotic and overprotective of his two sons after the death of his wife. Adopted daughter and playwright Margot is incredibly secretive and depressed, spending entire days hiding in the bathroom, away from her psychologist husband. Former tennis champion Richie suffered a mental breakdown during his last match and is living on a boat in the middle of the ocean, in love with (and avoiding) Margot.

And then, in a twist of events that involves a fake fire drill, depression, and possibly stomach cancer, all three grown children, their mother, and their estranged father, end up together again. Living under the same roof.

In any other movie this would be a recipe for awkward situations, crude jokes, and over-the-top ridiculous family dinners. The Royal Tenenbaums, however, goes a different route. It's understated and quiet as each member of the family finds themselves dealing with issues that had long been ignored. What always strikes me with this movie and the story it tells is how adolescent the whole thing is, how much the journey of each sibling (as well as family friend Eli Cash), reminds me of the things most people deal with in teenage- or young-adulthood. Chas is dealing simultaneously with his anger at his dad as well as the heartbreak over losing his wife. Margot, having always been referred to as the "adopted daughter," and constantly reminded that she wasn't really part of the family, has an erratic and underdeveloped sense of identity. And of course, there's Richie.

RICHIE TENENBAUM IS ANGSTY. And that's putting it lightly. His romantic life resembles a twisted Norman Rockwell painting, his best friend has gone off the deep end, and he just has so many emotions - most of them sad and depressing.

Essentially, everyone in this movie is messed-up. Every. Single. Character. And yet, in an odd sort of way, that's part of why I love them so much. There's something beautiful in watching these people try to right their wrongs, solve their problems, and become the people they once were and the people they want to be again. Sure, The Royal Tenenbaums has the best soundtrack ever, ugly-pretty scenery, and the indie world's stamp of approval, but it also has a complicated and wonderful story full of redemption, acceptance, and love, as well as fascinating and sympathetic characters. It's full of angst, sadness, dysfunction, and missteps in every direction, but - if you can get past all of that - it's beyond wonderful.

Weekly Dose of Crafts!

So late last week I decided to join my first ever Mystery Knit A Long, it seems like it's going to be a lot of fun! It officially starts tomorrow but I'm waiting for my long cable to arrive before I can start. Here is some information in case you want to join too!

I had my second of three Sock Knitting classes yesterday! We didn't get exactly as far as I think the teacher expected so I stopped back over this morning to get some help with my gusset, I think from here it's going to be smooth sailing!

My mittens are almost done as well! Man these were so easy to make! The only annoying thing was I was trying to get the greens to match up to my first mitten so I did a lot of cutting and reordering of the yarn to try and get it to match up, it's not perfect but oh well! I'm really really happy with these, I think they are one of my favorite things I've made, they just need thumbs now!

Still working a bit here and there on the fingerless mittens for my mom!

I finally decided it was time to try one of the tiny Danger Crafts ornaments! So far it's going pretty good (after a false start last week) my sides are a little messed up part of the way but it's my first little toy so I'll live with it. I love this pattern designer, to see some of her patterns click here, she also has a book coming out in a month or two!

Yarn used:
Knit Picks Palette in a variety of colors

And lastly I'm still working away on this scarf! So a lot of work done but nothing finished!

Hardcover vs Paperback 107

Hate List by Jennifer Brown

Hardcover

Paperback

Amazon.com:

Five months ago, Valerie Leftman's boyfriend, Nick, opened fire on their school cafeteria. Shot trying to stop him, Valerie inadvertently saved the life of a classmate, but was implicated in the shootings because of the list she helped create. A list of people and things she and Nick hated. The list he used to pick his targets.

Now, after a summer of seclusion, Val is forced to confront her guilt as she returns to school to complete her senior year. Haunted by the memory of the boyfriend she still loves and navigating rocky relationships with her family, former friends and the girl whose life she saved, Val must come to grips with the tragedy that took place and her role in it, in order to make amends and move on with her life.

The hardcover image on this book is one of those classic images that just is right and for me, something that would be very hard to forget and sorry but I'm going to get a bit sassy here for a second, all I can say about the paperback is "Hey paperback, 1997 called and it wants its everything back" what happened here? I do not like this regression.

Thanks to Irish who pointed out this H vs P!

Blog Tour: The Icing on the Cake by Alison Kent (True Vows)

Amazon.com:

Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match . . . dot com! An online dating service is not Michelle Snow's idea of how to find love, but when the Big 3-0 hits, Michelle decides she has nothing to lose since she hasn't brought a date home in ten years, she's professionally burned out, and her climb up the corporate ladder has come at the expense of abandoning her sweet dream: to own a boutique cupcakery.

Todd Bracken, early thirties and a successful technology consultant, isn't exactly a player after being off the market for ten years, and pours himself into his dual passions of martial arts and home-sweet-home renovations. Only there's no one to come home to so he decides to give Match.com a try. Todd isn't so sure the Internet dating scene is his thing—until a message pops up in the wee hours on a weekend night: 'I like your smile.' Todd likes—a lot—the whole package that glides into a French bistro in Washington, D.C.

It's serious mojo-at-first-sight but there's a glitch: Todd and Michelle live in different cities. Will love find its way in the digital age with a 'You've Got Mail' courtship when video cam kisses just aren't enough? And when Todd challenges Michelle to not only go for her dream but let him share it, will they be able to make it happen together despite obstacles more plentiful than a shower of rainbow sprinkles?

Ever since I heard about the True Vows series (the first reality-based romance series) last Spring I have been so excited about the concept! Taking a real life love story and turning it into a book, how cool! I would love to find out more about how the books were written, did the authors interview the couples. read interviews with them, how much is straight from the couple and how much is the author's addition, I just love the concept!

And specifically with The Icing on the Cake which deals with Michelle's dreams of opening up a cupcake bakery, I mean what's not to love about CUPCAKES! Michelle and Todd meet via match.com. I sort of figured there would be a bit more in the book about online dating but they meet up face to face pretty quickly and the whole internet relationship thing is very short lived.

Like a lot of the romance novels I've read, I love that The Icing on the Cake switches between both Michelle and Todd's perspectives, I felt like I got to know them both equally that way. And the story is rather sweet, you can tell they are both genuinely caring people and since this is about real people, I love knowing these two are really out there living their life together! One of my favorite passages is about a tour of bakeries that Todd puts together in New York City for Michelle, I am happy to say I have been to two of their stops, delicious!

But, since this is based on a real life couple, the ups and downs and excitement you find in all stories is sort of softened, nothing really that shocking happens, they both have their own personal struggles and triumphs but I guess I could have used a little more zing in one way or another.

Overall a sweet book from what looks to be a very promising series of books!

The Icing on the Cake was released on September 14th 2010

Lookalikes 127

Love You to Death by Melissa Senate

The Secret of Us by Roxanne Henke

Here is an interesting tidbit from Deborah who suggested this lookalike, they were both released the same time! I'm not sure either of these are completely working for me, in the first, the arm position looks sort of exaggerated and uncomfortable and in the second it's overall too monotone, with a quick glance the woman's shirt and the background blend together.

Thanks to Deborah who suggested this lookalike!

Weekly Dose of Crafts!

A bunch of stuff to show this week again! Probably too much!

Let's start with the most exciting thing, my order from Knit Picks arrived, my first personally placed order! I got yarn for Christmas gifts, some needles to try (I'm in love with them!), a kit, some yarn to try some tiny toys and a few other things!

Here it is unpacked. Let me know if you are interested in the details of what everything is and I'll stick it in the comments! And this order may or may not be on top of a good sale at Joann's and a good sale tomorrow at Michael's...

Over the weekend I worked a few rows on my neglected ripple, so it gets to be the background  this week!

Here is the hat I brought to Knitting class last Wednesday (tonight is my last class) it was going along well and then I realized after the brim I was doing the wrong pattern, I was reading it as one sequence for rows 1 and 3 and another for 2 and 4 but it's actually 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 so I think I'm doing the seed stitch instead of the moss stitch. :(

Here are the two scarves that were in progress last week, and they are now done!

I've been seeing these Newfoundland Mittens around a lot lately and after reading the pattern I realized they weren't too hard so I started my own pair, I think I'll be bringing these to my final knitting class tonight.

Yarns used:
Berroco Vintage Black 5145
Mochi Plus 574

When my Knit Picks order arrived I was really excited to try my new needles (I got a try-it set which has 1 pair of interchangeable in their 3 styles) and also a few other sizes for my Christmas projects. I really want to get a full set of their needles now but don't know which to get! I've usually stayed away from wood needles because they are too grippy for me but these I really like!

This is a scarf for either my dad or grandpa, I got 2 browns so we'll see how it ends up! I really like this pattern because it's reversible!

Yarn used:
Comfy Bulky Fedora

My mom really liked the fingerless gloves I had made last week so I'm making her a pair too!

Yarn used:
Comfy Worsted Jalapeno

And finally, last week I found out that my favorite local yarn store was having a beginners sock class starting this week, and I signed up! My first class was yesterday and there are 2 more sessions. We are making socks from worsted weight and I guess they will be considered more slipper socks, but apparently I will be able to apply the same rules to sock weight yarn so I'm really excited to learn! I'm eying some of this yarn!

For next week I'm just making the tube of the sock that goes to your ankle. I've decided I'm not really fond of the yarn I picked, it's not soft enough for my hands but oh well. I'm just learning! Also, I'm pretty much the slowest knitter in my class and also the youngest haha!

Yarn used:
Dream in Color Classy Worsted Weight Ruby River

The Pillow Book of Lotus Lowenstein

Hardcover

Paperback

An adorable, completely original YA voice.

Lotus Lowenstein's life is
merde. She dreams of moving to Paris and becoming an existentialist. Yet here she is trapped in Park Slope, Brooklyn, with a New-Agey mom, an out-of-work dad, and a chess champion brother who dreams of being a rock star. Merci à Dieu for Lotus’s best friend, Joni, who loves French culture enough to cofound their high school’s first French Club with Lotus. At the first meeting, the cutest boy in the world walks in. His name is Sean, and he too loves French culture and worships Jean-Paul Sartre.

At first, Lotus thinks Sean is the best thing to happen to her in years. He’s smart, cultured, and adorable. Unfortunately, though, Joni feels the same way. And having an existentialist view of love, Sean sees nothing wrong with enjoying both girls’ affections. Things come to a head when all three depart for Montreal with their teacher, Ms. G, on the French Club’s first official field trip. Will Sean choose Joni over Lotus? And will Lotus and Joni’s friendship ever recover?

Aww I really liked this book! And I find the hardcover to be so classically beautiful. I guess if they HAD to change the cover for the paperback they made a great choice!

ATTENTION: Someone Has Stolen My Blogging Identity (and I'm not kidding)

It was brought to my attention today by a publisher that someone has been using my blog url and my first name, Alea, in the attempts to request advance reader copies.

They are writing from their own email address and with their own mailing address. This is their information, please let me know if this person has contacted you as me.

Emily B. (not her email address)
from the domain name @insightbb.com

Please email me if you are concerned this person has contacted you and I will confirm if that is them.

All my emails come from aleareadsATgmail.com.

I just wanted to put this out in attempts to stop them and bring it to the attention of any publishers or publicists who have heard from them under my name.

Thank you for your help!

Lookalikes 126

 OyMG by Amy Fellner Dominy

Donut Days by Lara Zielin

As Amy who suggested this one pointed out, it's rather interesting how they share cosmetic similarities but also both deal with religion! I like them both and for Donut Days they went a little further in the paperback with the look, you can see it here.

Thanks to Amy who suggested this lookalike!

Weekly Dose of Crafts!

This week is the opposite of last, there is A LOT to show this week!

While failing at really starting this Bite-Free Bed Bug in class last week on double pointed needles (twice actually with 2 different types) I ended up learning about the magic loop method and succeeding with that! The pattern is from Knitting MochiMochi.

Yarns used:
Vanna's Choice
Silver Blue
scraps of black and white

Loops & Threads Impeccable
Lavender

When the knitted Bite-Free Bed Bug didn't work out I started some slippers from Knit Scene magazine, which were surprisingly easy. I just grabbed the only bulky yarn I could think of that I had, so next time I think I would use a solid color & make the smaller size, these are a little big.

Yarn used:
Lion Brand Tweed Strips Orchid

I also tried the slipper in another yarn I really liked, which was worsted and not bulky, but instead of it coming out smaller like I expected it came out way too big and works better as a smurf hat. :/

A yarn fairy sent me some yarn that arrived on Saturday (thank you yarn fairy!) and it included a few skeins of Knit Picks yarn. I got so excited I had to try some of it out so I made some fingerless mittens!

Yarn used:
1 skein Comfy Worsted Pomegranate

Using the KP yarn got me really excited to try more and then I decided using some of their yarn for Christmas presents might be fun so I got going on a Christmas present planning spree!
I started a simple garter stitch scarf for my sister holding the yarn double and will make a hat to go with it as well, for Christmas.

Yarn used:
Bernat Mosaic Ambrosia

After ordering Twinkie Chan's book online last week (Border's website said it was going to be online only) finding out it was back ordered and also ordering at B&N as a backup for that back order, I saw it on the shelf at Borders! Anyhow I went back with my Borders.com receipt and they let me get my copy in store, I was so excited I started the Giant Carrot Scarf!

Yarn used:
Red Heart Soft Yarn
Tangerine
Guacamole

Vanna’s Baby
Sweet Pea

And finally I started a hat to work on in my knitting class tonight! Berroco Vintage is so so soft!

Yarn used:
Berroco Vintage 5155
