In the era of Glee and with the resurgence of boy bands, Pitch Perfect hits all the right notes. What originally drew me to this movie's concept was my love of the TV show Glee, but what kept me was basically seeing stuff like this:

Hilarious right? You know how a lot of movie trailers give away the best parts? Well Pitch Perfect (in theaters 9/28 everywhere 10/5) definitely saved a lot for the movie. 

 I love the casting in this movie, you have a whole gaggle of hilarious women (including the scene stealing Rebel Wilson and the girl with the bangs-you will know her when you see her-I think she stole the whole movie!) and few great guys as well (HIMYM fans watch for the Ted Mosby lookalike!) Basically this movie was beyond hilarious and the singing was pitch perfect (hehe.)

Hang It Up-The Ting Tings This is a great one for when you are stuck in traffic. 5.Young Folks-Peter Bjorn and John Who doesn't wish they had thought of this song. 6. Don't You Want Me (Glee Cast Version) I love the energy in this song it makes me want to jump up and down for the entire song 7. Lloyd, I'm Ready to be Heartbroken-Camera Obscura Love the story behind this song and of course it's fun to sing along to! 8. Shake It Out-Florence + The Machine Florence can do no wrong in my mind. 9. Sweet Disposition-The Temper Trap This one just gives me chills! 10. I Follow Rivers-Lykke Li I play this one at work so often I make people groan 11. Young Blood-The Naked and Famous I just love the opening notes of this song.  12. My Love-The Bird and the Bee So sweet. 13. Don't You (Forget About Me)-Simple Minds Even before I saw the movie I knew this one had to be on my list and well hell, after seeing the movie it would just be wrong without it. One of my favorites.

Speaking of music, the Pitch Perfect soundtrack is amazing. Duh, since it's a movie about music it damn well better be amazing! I'm excited to see one of my favorite performances is on the soundtrack:

 

I'd definitely recommend this movie. You know it's good when you can't stop laughing and walk away with more than a handful of quotes. "By the way...do you want to see a dead body?" I'm definitely going to snap this one right up for my DVD collection when it's out!

With Fall TV back on I haven't been watching too many dvds but here is what I watched in the last two months!

SEPTEMBER:

One Day- I thought there was no way this could be bad, turned out I was wrong. Rather disappointing.

The Good Wife Season 1

Burlesque- Was really surprised how much I liked it. It was just beautiful to watch!

Sherlock Holmes

The Greatest Movie Ever Sold- Great concept, he always makes great documentaries.

Prom- Really really liked this!

Never Let Me Go- Interesting concept for a movie... probably should have read the book first!

This Year In Movies: June

6 movies for me in June.

No Strings Attached- Extremely predictable but cute. Fun seeing Natalie Portman in a chickflick.

The Tourist- This movie was kind of slow going but I adored the ending!

Tangled- I kept hearing how wonderful this movie was and thought I'd give it a try and it totally was!

Megamind- Also cute, reminded me a little of The Incredibles. Some laugh out loud moments.

The King's Speech- Finally saw this! It was enjoyable.

He's Just Not That Into You- Rewatch, I love movies that are told in vignettes.

Bridesmaids: A Movie Review

**I was hoping to post this in the morning for anyone that was planning to head out and see the movie tonight and wanted some info but as a lot of us known blogger was down. :( **

Remember forever ago when I used to review movies, you know when they were more than a 1 sentence reaction? Well it's finally time for another one of those! Last week I had the exciting opportunity to see a screening of Bridesmaids and boy was it funny!

It was a great balance of everything in love in a funny movie! Tons of laugh out loud moments and I mean tons but also a good amount of heart. It's definitely not a chick flick, daring to go to a few OMG they did not go there places having me practically in tears from laughter. But it also explores friendships between women and how they can change due to any number of factors.

Some of my favorite moments include a plane and a cameo by Melissa McCarthy's husband, a chocolate fountain, lip syncing and 2 British siblings. I definitely can't wait to watch this movie again!

First let's talk about the cast, so so many wonderful actresses and a few wonderful actors as well. 

The movie stars Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live) as Annie who also co-wrote the movie as the best friend and Maid of Honor of Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live, Away We Go) as Lillian the bride, and Rose Byrne (Damages) who I always thought more as a dramatic actress as Helen the very put together new friend of Lillian. The cast of bridesmaids is rounded out by Melissa McCarthy (Gilmore Girls) like you have never seen her before as Megan, Ellie Kemper (The Office) as Becca and Wendi McLendon-Covey (Reno 911) as Rita. So definitely a very talented and hilarious cast.

You'll also see a cameo appearance by Jon Hamm (Mad Men) as Ted who I've always thought should do more comedy, 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live come to mind as HILARIOUS and Chris O'Dowd (The IT Crowd) takes the cake as my favorite male cast member, I love this guy! 

I do wish we would have seen more of Becca and Rita, their storylines were much smaller than the rest of the women. I could not get over Melissa McCarthy and Megan, in a lot of scenes she stole the show.

Some of the funniest scenes were between Annie and Helen, Lillian's two best friends. They are complete opposites, Annie's life has pretty much fallen apart while Helen's cannot be more put together. The tension between them is hilarious, though they have just met for the first time at Lillian's Engagement party it doesn't stop them from going at it from the very start.

Oh man how I adore Chris O'Dowd and I had no idea he was even in this movie! When he came on screen for the first time my friend had to shush me because I was so excited and started chattering.

One super random comment, Kristen Wiig has the best earrings in this movie, did anyone else notice this? So if you go to see the movie I hope you enjoy it and stop back to tell me what you think!

This Year in Movies: April

This month I watched 6 movies nothing that really blew me away though....

The Switch- This movie started kind of weird but it ended up being pretty sweet in the end.

Love and Other Drugs- Ok, I felt like I've seen this exact movie sometime in the past, the most unique thing about it was the background of the pharmaceutical industry.

Waiting for Superman- This was my favorite movie this month. Everyone should see this documentary!

How Do You Know- Meh. I think there was something off with the writing here. The actors are usually great in other roles, the plot was all over the place and the dialogue was off.

10 to 11- I got to go to the local International Film Festival this year and I saw two movies. I went a few years ago and was excited to go again this year. I rather liked this movie, it was a quiet sort of humor, interesting.

The Bengali Detective- I saw this documentary at the film festival as well, it was a strange mix between really sad, disturbing and hilarious. I liked it but it ended rather abruptly.

This Year in Movies: March

This month I watched 7 movies and 1 tv show on dvd!

Monk Season 6- After taking a break for a bit I watched some more Monk!

Duplicity- Eh ok.

The International- Eh slightly less ok.

The Romantics- I liked this but was hoping for just a little more something.

Life As We Know It- Really cute, I was hoping it would be great and it was!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid- Rewatch, I think I wished I was really in the theater seeing the new movie though!

Morning Glory- Really cute too!

Flipped- Sweet, I think the dvd case said something about it being an instant classic, I agree!

This Year in Movies: February

 This was a month of strictly movies, 7 to be exact, no tv on dvd shockingly! All the movies were sort of ok with none standing out as amazing. 

Dinner for Schmucks - Pretty much exactly how I thought it would be, super annoying but still kind of worth seeing if only for all the random hilarious people that showed up in the movie, including the guy from the IT Crowd!

I Hate Valentine's Day - I was hoping this would bring back some of the magic of My Big Fat Greek Wedding and unfortunately it really didn't. Nia smiled so much and in a seemingly unnatural way it really kind of ruined her character, it's like her face was frozen that way for most of the movie.

Step Up 3 - I kind of dig these Step Up movies... I hope they keep making them.

The Other Guys - Some of Will Ferrell's movies lately have been really really stupid and while this was still stupid I liked it more than some of his other ones, it was pretty funny at a few points. Loved the guest stars at the beginning.


Grown Ups - Sort of a cute family type movie with humor that isn't really appropriate for young family members if that makes any sense?

The Social Network - Interesting, I sort of wished it had covered more time it ended sort of all of a sudden for me

Center Stage 2: Turn It Up - Damn was this not good, yet I kept watching. While the first Center Stage movie was on the cheesy side this just took it to a really kind of crappy place.

This Year In Movies: January

 This month I watched 7 movies and and 3 tv shows on dvd.

Eat Pray Love - Interesting. Made me hungry lol.

The Kids Are Alright - Wonderful movie, I can definitely see why it's being nominated for awards.

Inception - Eh. Ok I guess. Leonardo DeCaprio's wife totally annoying the heck out of me and I actually really like that actress. The best part was Joseph Gordon Levitt floating around the hotel. A lot of people told me to put down my knitting and really pay attention, after watching it I don't think I really had to do that.

Monk Season 2 - So sweet and sad at the same time. Total win.

Monk Season 3 - I love how to show follows a formula sort of but never really gets boring or repeats itself.

Monk Season 4 - Still loving Monk. I had to pull myself away mid Season 5 to catch up on some tv I haven't been watching due to my Monk addiction!

Despicable Me - So great! I loved the story and the animation. Very cute.

Easy A - Hilarious. I need to see this again ASAP.

Going the Distance - Eh, not as good as I was hoping. I felt like Drew Barrymore was trying to play someone too young and I wasn't buying it at all.

Freakonomics - I thought the way this book was brought to the screen was brilliant. 4 filmmakers took a chapter from the book and explored it in a short documentary.

6 movies and 5 tv shows on dvd this month!


Psych Season 2- I started watching Psych when I ran out of netflix dvds and turned to the streaming version of Netflix and it turned out I really did start to enjoy it!

Bored to Death Season 1- I adore Jason Schwartzman so I had to check it out. Turns out it wasn't bad at all, another funny mystery!

Sex and the City 2- At first I didn't like the idea of having a second movie but I rather enjoyed it! Will be interesting to see if they make another!

Some Kind of Wonderful- 80s rewatch!

Psych Season 3- I really like how Psych sometimes changes their credits for the Christmas episodes and other themed episodes.

Psych Season 4- Still good! Luckily I was able to catch up with the newest episodes (Season 5) and watch the last few episodes when they aired!

The Blind Side- Really liked this movie! I had thought it would be pretty sad but it was actually not really that sad at all, more uplifting!

The Runaways- Blah, did not like this movie really at all.

Black Swan- Ugh so disappointing. I really enjoyed it when I thought there would be some kind of surprise or twist (which is what you would expect with a psychological thriller) and then it ended and nothing so totally disappointed. Should have been promoted as a drama.

Monk Season 1- Found another light mystery show to check out and again I like it! Can't wait to watch the rest of the seasons!

Elf- Must watch holiday favorite!

This Year In Movies: November

Parks and Recreation Season 1- I watched an episode or two when this aired on tv, I thought it was ok turns out the whole season was like that but luckily the season is short and the second season gets pretty awesome!

Parks and Recreation Season 2- See above.

Dexter Season 4- Finally got to find out how the shocking ending of the season occurred, I somehow read a spoiler and had to wait like a year to find out why!

The Back Up Plan- Cute.

Letters to Juliet- Pretty cute.


Make It Happen- Fun similar to the other dance movies...

Diary of a Wimpy Kid- Loved this, read the graphic novel a few days later, I love what the movie did with the original material, in a few cases it made it better!

Greenberg- Ugh. I need to stop watching his movies, just because he co-wrote a few movies with Wes Anderson doesn't mean his own work will be anything like it.

Nothing Like the Holidays- Sweet movie, hadn't seen a few of these actors in anything in awhile!

Modern Family Season 1- Damn Netflix probably still has this is on a Very Long Wait, so thank god Target had it on sale so I could finally watch it. WATCH THIS SHOW.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1- Can't believe this is coming to an end very soon. I remembered the book and being almost too dark so I was glad for the moments of humor.

The Office: Overtime- This was a collection of The Office shorts from the web, I hadn't seen most of them but was hoping there might be a few more than there were. Oh well.

Date Night- Cute! These two make a great comedic team!

Psych Season 1- I wasn't sure if I would like this show but it's actually pretty fun. (It's streaming on Netflix right now if you are interested!)


Royal Pains Season 1- Another one I wasn't really sure about but it held my attention!

Killers- Funny! This was a Black Friday purchase, glad I bought it!

White Collar Season 1- Another one I really didn't know much about but I got it from Netflix and enjoyed it!

Welcome to 111 Arthur Avenue (or: A Discussion of The Royal Tenenbaums) by Jordyn of Ten Cent Notes

Some of you may know, my all time favorite movie is Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums. A few months back Jordyn watched it and we got to talking about how fabulous and wonderful and everything in between it is. I asked her if she wanted to share some of that love over on my blog! A girl has got to strive to live up to her blog name, if even just a little!  If you haven't seen The Royal Tenenbaums or Wes's other movies (Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Life Aquatic, The Darjeeling Limited or Fantastic Mr. Fox), well you just really must! Thanks for stopping by Jordyn!

The Royal Tenenbaums is the type of weird, dark-comedy, messed-up-family, slow-moving film that, if you're going to enjoy it at all, you have to pay attention to. This movie demands something of its viewers and in return gives them a beautifully-crafted movie with heartbreaking characters and a dysfunction to spare. From the drug-addicted best friend, the absentee father, to the semi-incestuous love story, there's a lot weird in this movie.

The film opens on a family of child prodigies and then goes on to tell us how their lives have fallen apart since childhood. Business maverick Chas has become neurotic and overprotective of his two sons after the death of his wife. Adopted daughter and playwright Margot is incredibly secretive and depressed, spending entire days hiding in the bathroom, away from her psychologist husband. Former tennis champion Richie suffered a mental breakdown during his last match and is living on a boat in the middle of the ocean, in love with (and avoiding) Margot.

And then, in a twist of events that involves a fake fire drill, depression, and possibly stomach cancer, all three grown children, their mother, and their estranged father, end up together again. Living under the same roof.

In any other movie this would be a recipe for awkward situations, crude jokes, and over-the-top ridiculous family dinners. The Royal Tenenbaums, however, goes a different route. It's understated and quiet as each member of the family finds themselves dealing with issues that had long been ignored. What always strikes me with this movie and the story it tells is how adolescent the whole thing is, how much the journey of each sibling (as well as family friend Eli Cash), reminds me of the things most people deal with in teenage- or young-adulthood. Chas is dealing simultaneously with his anger at his dad as well as the heartbreak over losing his wife. Margot, having always been referred to as the "adopted daughter," and constantly reminded that she wasn't really part of the family, has an erratic and underdeveloped sense of identity. And of course, there's Richie.

RICHIE TENENBAUM IS ANGSTY. And that's putting it lightly. His romantic life resembles a twisted Norman Rockwell painting, his best friend has gone off the deep end, and he just has so many emotions - most of them sad and depressing.

Essentially, everyone in this movie is messed-up. Every. Single. Character. And yet, in an odd sort of way, that's part of why I love them so much. There's something beautiful in watching these people try to right their wrongs, solve their problems, and become the people they once were and the people they want to be again. Sure, The Royal Tenenbaums has the best soundtrack ever, ugly-pretty scenery, and the indie world's stamp of approval, but it also has a complicated and wonderful story full of redemption, acceptance, and love, as well as fascinating and sympathetic characters. It's full of angst, sadness, dysfunction, and missteps in every direction, but - if you can get past all of that - it's beyond wonderful.

This Year In Movies: October

This month I watched 14 movies and 6 tv shows on dvd.


You Again- Very cute, I think this is a perfect all ages (PG) fun movie!

Kick-Ass- Not really what I expected but had some good humor to it.

Popular Season 1- Hadn't watched this since it was on tv, I sort of remembered it definitely!

Bram Stoker's Dracula- Ugh didn't like this.

The Riches Season 2- Eh, I think the first season was better, can see why this was the last season.

Catfish- Very interesting, even though I had spoiled the twist for myself before seeing it I thought it was still interesting, I feel like this one will be talked about for a long time.

Clueless- My first favorite movie <3.

Just Like Heaven- Another chick flick rewatch!

Rocky Horror Picture Show- Had to rewatch this one to prepare for last week's Rocky Horror episode!

A Pyromaniac's Love Story- This one was suggested by author Sarah MacLean after talking about the wonderful movie that is Penelope. Was fun!

Ghost World- Another rewatch, of another favorite, I guess it was rewatch month!

Shock Treatment- This was the "sequel" of sorts to Rocky Horror which I had never seen before. Different but still shared some similar stylist elements. Also some of the same cast and characters!

Babies- Very interesting, but I thought it could have been improved with at least some narration.

Popular Season 2- I hadn't remembered how big of a cliffhanger this show ended on! 0_o Luckily I read something that gave away where the show was to go from here.

Pushing Daises Season 1- Here's another rewatch of a favorite. Still sad it was canceled. :(

The Good Guy- Thought this was a pretty interesting movie I haven't heard a lot about. Check it out!

Land of the Lost- Anna Friel from Pushing Daisies was in this so I thought I would check it out. Was funny enough to craft to!

Get Him to the Greek- For the longest time I had no idea what this was about. It was funny and also had heart!

Pushing Daisies Season 2- So sad it didn't go on from here. :( If you'd never watched this show you must!

30 Days Season 3- Man do I love this show, another one, if you haven't checked it out you must!

This Year In Movies: September

I didn't think I had watched much in September but apparently I did! 8 tv seasons and 12 movies. 

Degrassi: TNG Season 8 - It feels like forever ago that I finished catching up on Degrassi but it was actually just the beginning of this month! New episodes actually start next week!

Degrassi Goes Hollywood - I love how Seasons 8 & 9 of Degrassi had movies! Nice way to tie up some of the characters and see them off the show.

Degrassi: TNG Season 9 - A lot of the regular characters were gone by this season yet it was still good!

Degrassi Takes Manhattan - Anything with NYC rules.

Gossip Girl Season 3 - I got all caught up so for the first time since the first season I can watch the episodes as they air!

Wake - This was kind of a weird but cute movie.

My Boys Season 1 - I've heard a lot about this show and finally decided to watch it only to find out after I finished Season 3 it got canceled :(

Bart Got A Room - Really weird, I think I'll have to watch this again to figure it out.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - I think this is the best movie of 2010 so far for me. Finally decided to check out the graphic novels too, this movie was hilarious.

Management - Quirky.

2 Days in Paris - I feel like I've seen this before but I don't think I have. Also, I'm pretty sure if you don't turn on the English subtitles you might miss some of the French translation as well.

Fantastic Mr. Fox - Re-watch. Adore!

Kabluey - This movie was strange, I loved it. If you like indies this might be one for you.

Dead Like Me: Life After Death - Nice wrap up to the tv show, sad they had to replace one of the actresses with someone else though.

My Boys Season 2 - Seasons 2 and 3 are a lot shorter than the first but I still really liked it, I liked how the episodes revolved less around baseball references after season 1.

My Boys Season 3 - After Season 3 I ended up being able to catch Season 4 on the network's website, yay, still bummed it got canceled though.

The Guild Season 3 - This show is so clever/great. There were some great special features for Season 3 too.

Penelope - Re-watch <3

Community Season 1 - Oh dear god this show is HILARIOUS! I'm so glad I finally watched it. Definitely will be buying the dvd at some point!

Mystery Team - Hehe. This stars Donald Glover from Community and some of his friends who wrote, and starred in the movie. Strange mix of innocence and nastiness.

This Year in Movies: August

With most of the summer shows over and my crochet habit in full swing it seems I've found some time to watch some things.... er 17 movies and 9 tv shows on dvd to be exact!

Degrassi: TNG Season 1 - Over the years I've had a friend mention Degrassi every now and again, I even caught a few early episodes some random weekend on some random tv channel. Recently John mentioned it to me and I figured now is the time to really watch it... and watch I did. Basically I'm obsessed. It's definitely a great show to crochet to!

Degrassi: TNG Season 2 - I really love seeing how all the kids grow up, and how they look a bit older every year. Also love seeing how they change the opening credits every season or two!

Degrassi: TNG Season 3 - Yup, not nearly done for this month!

Dear John - I thought the ending of this one was interesting, a bit different than the other Nicolas Sparks movies I've seen. I love both of the leads so it was fun to watch.

Degrassi: TNG Season 4 - And still watching....

She's Out of My League - This was a fluffy little movie. Sort of when the Beauty Meet the Geek.

TiMER - I had my eye on this movie for years! I love the idea of it, timers implanted in people's wrists that tell them when they are going to meet "the one" for the most part it definitely lived up to my expectations. Not sure if I totally liked the ending though.

Brief Interviews with Hideous Men - Ugh, didn't like this. I wanted to since John Krasinski directed it but it was not my thing at all.

Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger - This movie was totally cute and very original, I really liked it. I started checking out some movies on Netflix Instant view (like the above two) and this was one that was recommended based on other stuff I had watched and I totally liked it!

Youth in Revolt - I love Michael Cera but was sort of afraid I might not like this movie based on the trailer, but it turned out to be just quirky enough and not too over the top like I feared. Good stuff.

Arranged - What a beautiful movie. The friendship between an Orthodox Jewish woman and a Muslim woman that both teach at the same school, I just adored it!

According to Greta - This was a Hilary Duff movie I had heard about, turned out to be pretty good!

Dakota Skye - Random Indie about this girl that knows the truth when people tell lies. Kind of a funny concept.

The Babysitters - This sort of dark and weird movie about babysitters that do more than take care of kids.

Falling Up - I loved the premise of this, a doorman and a girl that lives in the building, fall for each other. I just loved seeing what happens in a building lobby! It starred the guy from Running with Scissors!

Step p 2: The Streets - After watching SYTYCD all summer and hearing about Step Up 3 over and over again, I realized I hadn't seen the second movie! I love dancing movies!

The Neighbor - This was like the month of gimmicky movies, this one was about two neighbors, one trying to get rid of the other and in the end they realize they kind of like one another.

Degrassi: TNG Season 5 - And we are back!

Glee Vol 1 - Have to start getting ready for Season 2. I also watched it to see how the book, Glee: The Beginning jives with the pilot. It sort of did and sort of didn't.

Shutter Island - Ugh. What a waste of time. I was expecting some awesome twist at the end, but it was the most obvious ending. The first thing you think of when you hear about the movie.

Blue State - This was a rather interesting movie, people moving to Canada after Bush won for the second time.

How to Be - Another R. Patz movie. I thought the beginning to the middle was good and then it just got weird at the end.

Degrassi: TNG Season 6 - Yup.

Secret Life of the American Teenager Vol 4 - Why am I still watching this?

Loverboy - 80s movie with Patrick Demsey. Like The Babysitters, it's about a pizza delivery boy that delivers more than pizza.

Degrassi: TNG Season 7 - Oh yeah, and I'm onto Season 8 already.
