At A Loss For Words by Diane Schoemperlen

From HarperCollins.ca:

In a “he said, she said” story, the writer always gets the last word.

She is a writer, established and successful, with a full life and supportive friends. Then he walks into a book signing and back into her life 30 years after he broke her heart. This time, things seem different. The pair reconnects through emails, messages and fragments of conversation. But love leaves her with a nasty case of writer’s block. Looking for inspiration in the texts around her—optimistic horoscopes, evasive fortune cookies and the inane suggestions from books on writer’s block—she tries to find a way through the relationship that has seemingly stolen her gift for language.

Spinning us through the whirlwind love of her nameless protagonist, award-winning author Diane Schoemperlen weaves a stylish, innovative novel out of to-do lists and text messages. Exploring the different emotional languages spoken by men and women, At A Loss For Words is a charming take on the modern romance, warm and witty right through to its surprising and delicious resolution.

At A Loss For Words is a very original story in form and in style. The un-named main character shares with us her reconnection with a former love from 30 years ago, through her thoughts and letters to him, and her trouble with writer's block.

This is a quiet and sweet love story. I really liked how the characters expressed themselves through email, the discussions they had, and the stories they shared. The style of writing used is so beautiful, it's not something I have encountered previously. I really liked seeing the main character's daily life, visiting with friends, seeing a sign in a playing card or a horoscope, and the lists she found in books to help with writer's block. And, after awhile trying not to think about him, when he didn't respond back to her emails or wondering what his ... meant.

After awhile I felt the main character got a bit whiny and a bit obsessive which made it a little harder to read. And then, something happened which gave me a whole new perspective on the story. I thought I had the story all figured out and then this revelation took me by surprise! It was so great and I did not see it coming!

This is a sweet love story with a beautiful writing, an original concept and a great twist!

At A Loss For Words was released by Harper Collins Canada in paperback January 9th!

What's a story that you enjoy that involves writing back and forth between characters?

Delayed Replays by Liz Prince

Amazon.com Product Description:

With this second collection of comic strips after the critically-acclaimed Will You Still Love Me If I Wet The Bed?, Liz Prince continues to explore the intimacy of the couple, while at the same time revealing snippets of her life as a young cartoonist. Sentimental and humorous, these little gems of chaotic relationships and life come off like the best of daily newspaper strips.

Liz Prince's comics are slice of life comics. Funny encounters, funny situations, and even funny noises! It's all there! They remind me a little of Julia Wertz's Fart Party comics. Like Wertz sometimes, Prince uses a very rough sketchy illustration style for her comics.

I had a lot of laugh out loud moments reading these comics. The author has a sassy yet cute attitude which comes across great! A few of the characters seemed familiar from her previous comic, Will You Still Love Me If I Wet The Bed? but I was a little uncertain who was who. I thought I knew which was her boyfriend (he appears a lot in her previous collection) but by the end I was a little unsure. It would have been nice in the front or back to have a list of characters to keep everyone straight.

All in all, this is a great, little and fast collection of random slice of life comics!

Lookalikes 31

TMI by Sarah Quigley

Ad at a local grocery store

So I walked into the grocery store this morning is search of some healthy food and stood outside the door dumbfounded with my mouth hanging open seeing this lookalike. I went back later in the day to snap this picture.

So I'd say it's a pretty easy choice this time, the book cover is so beautiful I love the illustrations! Notice the difference in eye color, green to match the green of the cover and blue to match the blue of the ad. I wonder which is her real eye color, who knows maybe she really has brown eyes!

So (if it's even a choice) which is your favorite?

This Week In Books or So Much For Cutting Back *eyeroll*

Monday:

The Brightest Moon of the Century by Christopher Meeks

Plan B and The Debs came from Yan the awesome book fairy who let me mooch them! The Brightest Moon of the Century came from author Christopher Meeks and Flirting With Forty I won from Alyce at At Home With Books! Thank you!

Tuesday:

Got this from bookmooch!

Wednesday:

Got an empty envelope that was supposed to contain Sixteen and You, Maybe. Looks like it got ripped open in the mail on the way from a bookmoocher. *pout*

Thursday:

Got these from the library sale. Have you guys heard about the V.C. Andrews Challenge? Well I'm only a secret participant but I want to try and see if I can get anywhere with the challenge, so I'm going to start collecting the books!

I got What I Saw and How I Lied and Gamer Girl from my other book fairy Sharon! And Savvy Girl from another moocher!

Friday:

So went back to the library, because I'm weak. The guy told me he was allowed to sell these ARCs, not sure if that's exactly true but I didn't argue. What can I say, I love paperbacks.

Got this in the mail for review!

Saturday:

I won this to review from Harper Teen over at twitter!

I broke my little promise of not going into an actual bookstore (library doesn't count) for a few weeks and headed over there with my friend. I thought the clearance sale was over but apparently it's still going strongly!

Lookalikes 30

Deadly Little Secret by Laurie Faria Stolarz

Be With You by Takuji Ichikawa

You Know Where To Find Me by Rachel Cohn

Check out the similar composition between the first two, for not being the same picture they look a lot alike! The third cover reminds me of the atmosphere of the first cover. My vote is going to the middle cover, usually I got for poppy happy colors over dark mute colors any day! I do really like the title treatment of the first two though!

Which is your favorite?

Thanks to Krista for pointing out this lookalike!

Booking Through Thursday: The Best

It’s a week or two later than you’d expect, and it may be almost a trite question, but … what were your favorite books from 2008?

I didn't make a list at the end of 2008/beginning of 2009 because I thought I'd be to hard to pick, but I'm going to try in the spirit of BTT!

Just a  few of my favorites of 2008:

Perfect On Paper by Maria Murnane review
The Smart One and the Pretty One by Claire LaZebnik review
Let It Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle review
Cracked Up to Be by Courtney Summers review
Violet In Private by Melissa Walker review

These are just a few of my favorites!

What's one of your favorites of 2008?

Romeo and Juliet by Esther Pearl Watson

Amazon.com Product Description:

This remarkably well-told, bizarre and updated version of the classic tale of love and loss will blow your mind. Narrated by Donkey Kong, and set in a urban high school. Instead of poisoning themselves, the young lovers prove their devotion to each other by crushing themselves under a Coke machine. By Esther Pearl Watson, regular contributor to Bust magazine.

Esther Pearl Watson is hilarious, random, and very unique. When I heard she did a version of Romeo and Juliet I just had to read it!

The comic was funny and very very random, if a bit short. Having her strip, Unlovable to compare it to it didn't exactly live up to my expectations. Don't get me wrong, the illustrations were great, the story was funny and it was very very random. I just think the author truly shines with her Unlovable strip, which is why I'm very glad all the Unlovable comics have been collected into a book!

But anyways, it was definitely fun comparing her comic to the Romeo and Juliet we have all read! If you are ready to try an short indie comic with familiar content this is the place to start!

Lookalikes 29

Fragile Eternity by Melissa Marr

The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong

Doing two lookalikes this week, this one was too good to not post right now. It looks to me like the photos of the girl are one off from each other, they are totally the same girl to me, hair, nose lips.

I like them both but like Khy said, there is something a bit off about the Awakening, I think it's the hands, they just look weird, sort of illustrated/stylized compared to the rest of the image. And also, I'm not feeling the title treatment. Actually, the hand on Fragile Eternity is a little weird too, in the highlights/shadows and I would like for the girl to be slightly more in focus. I like that title treatment better though.

So I like the title treatment of the first cover and the face of the second and the hands of none! And these are being released a week apart from each other!

"Waiting On" Wednesday! 12

The Girls by Tucker Shaw

Meet Mary: She’s beautiful, and her ski-star boyfriend is cheating on her.

Meet Crystal: She’s a townie, and she’s cheating with Mary’s boyfriend.

Meet Sylvia: She’s nasty, and she’s got something up her Prada-designed sleeve.

Meet Amber: She’s a flake, she’s the barista at the hottest coffee shop in Aspen, and she serves up gossip even hotter than grande skim lattes.

Meet Peggy: She’s Mary’s best friend, and she has no idea how to cope with all these girls.

A modern retelling of the classic play The Women (which featured not one male in the cast), The Girls is a quick-witted, stylish comedy about friendship, love, and most important, gossip! An elite Aspen prep school sets the stage for jealousy and intrigue as the lives of many girls tangle into a wickedly fun mess (in which no boys ever appear).

Released on April 1st 2009.

This just sounds like a good time! I love books with a lot of main characters as well! I just saw the remake of The Women (still need to see the original) so now here is a book version!

What are you waiting on to be released?

Did you know that there are 1497 authors participating in LT Authors? If you haven't checked it out, head over for a moment and see if you can find out something new about an author! If you don't have time to go snooping, have you ever looked at the LT Author page before? Did you know that it is for authors and readers alike? Have you ever looked up a favorite or new author on LT to see what they read and if they have left any comments or reviews themselves? Have you ever told an author about LT Authors and encouraged them to check the site out?

I did know about LT Authors, but I didn't know how many there were! I like to see who is featured everyday on the homepage! I have 15 authors listed in my profile as participants in the LT Authors program, who's books I have. Some of them are my "Friends" on LibraryThing too!

I have told at least one author, that I recall about LibraryThing and the LT Authors program!

Hardcover vs. Paperback 10

You Know Where To Find Me by Rachel Cohn

Hardcover

Jamal said only, "Laura..." And I knew, just knew by the rip through my gut and the instant convulsion in my heart, knew by Jamal's uncharacteristically unsmiling face. I knew because Laura always did what I wished I could do.

First cousins Laura and Miles grew up like sisters. Miles thought of Laura as the golden one -- smart, beautiful, rich, and popular -- while Miles considered herself the unwanted one -- an unattractive, underachieving outcast. Laura's suicide shatters Miles and leaves her feeling completely alone, and sets Miles on a dangerous downward spiral. But in the strength Miles finds in herself and in those she didn't believe cared about her, she is able to rebuild her life in unexpected ways.

Rachel Cohn's emotionally powerful new novel views serious issues such as depression, suicide, prescription-drug abuse, and alternative family configurations through the lens of family love and survival.

My vote is for the paperback, the hardcover makes the book look like it has a paranormal aspect to me, something creepy maybe ghosts or possession. Based on the description I like the paperback, I also think a face shows a lot more emotion and expression than someone's back.

Hardcover or Paperback?

Thanks goes to Hope of Hope's Bookshelf who also thought this would make a great Hardcover vs. Paperback!

Houston, We Have A Problema by Gwendolyn Zepeda

From Publisher's Website:

Jessica Luna is your typical 26 year old: she has man trouble, mom trouble, and not a clue what to do with her life (though everyone else in her family seems to have plenty of suggestions!) After a lifetime of being babied by her family, Jess is incapable of trusting herself to make the right choices. So instead, she bases all of her life decisions on signs. She looks to everything for guidance, from the direction her rearview-mirror-Virgin-de-Guadalupe sways to whatever Madame Hortensia, her psychic, sees in the cards.

When her sort-of boyfriend Guillermo, a gifted unmotivated artist, disappoints her again, Jessica thinks it's time to call it quits. Just to be sure, she checks in with Madame Hortensia who confirms that yes, it is time for a change. (Who knew $20 could buy so much security!) Right on cue, Jess meets Jonathan; he's the complete opposite of Guillermo--of all Jess's boyfriends, in fact. He's successful, has a stable job....and is white. Jess isn't sure if Jonathan is really the change Madame Hortensia saw. Sure he gives great career advice, but is he advising her on a career she actually wants? And yes he's all about commitment, but is it Jess or her mother who really wants marriage?

Jess runs back to Madame Hortensia for advice, but even she is out of answers. Now there's only one thing that's certain: no one--not her mother, her sister, her boyfriend or her psychic--can tell her what to do. For better or for worse, Jess will have to take the plunge and make her own decisions if she wants to have any future at all.

This is a really fun and heartwarming book about a twenty-something's journey through love, work and family. During the day Jessica works a dull job at an insurance firm but all she wants to do is design websites. To ease her stress she's been seeing a sexy artist but she's unhappy about where the relationship is going. Jessica is superstitious and turns to signs, omens, and especially Madame Hortensia to help her decide what path to take in love and life. Mix in a little family love, drama and some cultural tension and you have the makings of a lovely story!

I really enjoyed this book! Starting my first full-time job about a year ago I'm always interested in stories involving twenty-somethings in the work place. It's fun to compare and contrast their experiences with my own. I also loved Jessica's background and interest in the arts, seeing as though I have that same background!

Going into this I thought this would be your basic chick-lit, but it was more than that. It deals a lot with family and the tension that can arise between sisters and even husbands and wives. I also was very interested in the growth that Jessica goes through when it comes to accepting others for they are on the inside rather than what they appear to be on the outside.

This is a great book, full of interesting characters, humor, and growing up! It's very satisfying to see a character evolve throughout a book, learn to depend on themselves, and go out and get what will really make them happy!

Houston, We Have A Problema is released on January 8th!

What's the last book you read that turned out to be much more than you had originally expected?

Beautiful Americans by Lucy Silag

From Publisher's Website:

What happens in Paris…

Secrets—
PJ’s deep blue eyes and angelic long blond hair conceal a truth that’s anything but. Will her dark past stay where it belongs in the backwoods of Vermont, or haunt her in the city of light?

Passion—
Always the good girl, Olivia plans to twirl her way to the top of the Parisian ballet scene. But that’s not supposed to include dancing on a table all night…or stumbling into the arms of the wrong boy.

Lies—
With his emo-trendy bedhead, hilarious comebacks and Southern drawl, Zack could win over anyone. Too bad he’s after the only one who’s forbidden…

Scandal—
All Alex wants from Paris is to nab that berry-red Dior coat and seduce the perfect penny-loafer-wearing boy – and Alex always gets what she wants. But will her scheming pay off? Or is she risking more than she knows…?

Alex, Olivia, Zack and PJ are spending a year at the prestigious Lycée de Monceau in the sparkling city of Paris. This is their chance to sip cafe au lait in Le Marais, throw secret parties in their host families’ Versailles-size apartments, and have the time of their lives. But when the secrets they thought they left behind come out, everything could be ruined…

Beautiful Americans was an engaging and exciting book. For anyone that has dreamed of studying abroad this book is for you and for anyone that wants to relive their study abroad experience this book is for you too! Told through 4 voices, everyone is bound to identify with one of the characters. I personally saw a little bit of myself in each of the four characters (PJ, Olivia, Alex, and Zack). Also, each of their 4 overlapping story lines fought for the spotlight, I couldn't pick a favorite!

We have PJ, who can't leave a family problem behind and it effects everything she does. Zack who is ready to come out of the closet and meet a cute boy, but his shyness holds him back. And Olivia, the good girl with her life all planned out at home, with a sweet boyfriend waiting for her. I felt I understood where all the characters were coming from aside from Alex, a New York fashionista who gets everything and everyone she wants.

At first I really liked Alex but then time after time she walked all over everyone and did anything she wanted, assuming that just saying sorry every time would make it all better. She was too focused on herself to really notice anyone else being effected by her until after she had hurt them. I'm really hoping that she redeems herself in the second book. I really want to like her! But, one thing I really liked about this book was being able to see each character from their own perspective and then everyone else's. It's really interesting to see what they keep inside compared to what they show the world, as will everyone.

The book takes place during the first semester of a year year long study abroad experience. I personally cannot wait to see where the story picks up and what is going on with all the characters when the story continues!

Beautiful Americans is released on January 8th!

The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling

From the back cover:

The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a Wizarding classic, first came to Muggle readers' attention in the book known as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Now, thanks to Hermione Granger's new translation from the ancient runes, we present this stunning edition with an introduction, notes, and illustrations by J.K. Rowling, and extensive commentary by Albus Dumbledore. Never before have Muggles been privy to these richly imaginative tales: "The Wizard and the Hopping Pot," "The Fountain of Fair Fortune," "The Warlock's Hairy Heart," "Babbitty Rabbitty and Her Cackling Stump," and of course, "The Tale of the Three Brothers." But not only are they the equal of fairy tales we now know and love, reading them gives new insight into the world of Harry Potter.

The Tales of Beedle the Bard is a great addition to the Harry Potter family. On the same level as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch Through the Ages adds in a bit more background information to the world of Harry Potter. Of the three books, I found this one the most interesting. I went into this hoping for some fables and fairy tales and that's exactly what I got. I only wish that there had been more, a nice chunky volume of tales! Now that would have been perfect!

Of the 5 stories, my favorite was The Fountain of Fair Fortune, thought they were all interesting. Enhancing the stories are Rowling's own drawings and Dumbledore's commentary. I think this is definitely a fun book for anyone that loves Harry Potter and a great introduction to the world of Harry Potter for a new reader!

This Week In Books Or Oops I Did It Again!

Saturday (night):

My friend knows me so well (this was a gift from her)! The day before I almost bought myself the calendar starring these angry little girls!

Monday: nothing

Tuesday:

So I got done with work early and was going to go straight to my bus but ended up having about 15 minutes to kill so at the last second I decided to just pop into the library book store. Of course that had tons of new things!!!!! Has anyone read the Dating Game books? I was just going to get the first one but the rest looked so lonely being left there! And I've been told that I need to read The Handmaid's Tale for years now!

These were waiting at home for review!

Wednesday:

Ok, so I went back to Half Price Books. It wasn't planned but I did go. My aunt wanted to go and wanted me to come with her- I swear! Several of these were only $2 so yay for that! I got the A-List because my sister gave me her other books in the series to read but we didn't have the first one! And look look the first book in the Mediator series! And Blind Submission! And a paperback copy of One Fifth Avenue!!!!

This came in the mail from the lovely Steph! Thank you Steph!

Before I heard about going back to Half Price Books I was planning on stopping back over to check out Borders's clearance sale once more after Shalonda told me about all the great new things she was finding on her second trip! Fortunately I only found one book and it was one I've had my eyes on for awhile now!

Thursday: nothing

Friday:

Booking Through Thursday: New Year's Resolutions

Happy New Year, everyone!
So … any Reading Resolutions? Say, specific books you plan to read? A plan to read more ____? Anything at all?
Name me at least ONE thing you’re looking forward to reading this year!

Well after completing my first reading challenge recently I'm gearing up to participate in three more! The 2009 YA Challenge, The 2009 Graphic Novel Challenge, and The 2009 ARC Reading Challenge. I limited the number of challenges I joined to genres that I was hoping to read more of this year (YA and Graphic Novels and ARCs which I've been reading all along) so they would help me along on those goals. I'm definitely going to try and finish these!!!

I love making lists so there is nothing more exciting than being able to check something off a list!

What are your reading goals for 2009?

Wanted- Not as good as expected.

Samantha Who?- Even cuter than I thought it would be!

The Memory Keeper's Daughter- Wasn't as depressing as I thought it would be, actually was sort of nice!

The Dark Knight- Pretty awesome, made me sad about poor Heath Ledger though!

Better Off Dead- A little crazy but I loved the romance!

The Happening- Utterly depressing, according to the special features it made me feel exactly how the director wanted me too which made me feel only slightly better.

Watching for Detectives- Cute but got a little old.

Elf- Rewatch- love watching this every holiday season!

American Teen- Wow, this was amazing! Must watch! (Check out the intentional lookalike above! I love The Breakfast Club!)

WALL-E- Rewatch, I adore this movie!

Priceless- Darling movie!

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull- Cheesy and annoying. Wish I had known it was about "aliens" no thanks to aliens!

The Women- Sweet movie- a remake

Say Anything- A rewatch- I'm still on my 80s movie kick!

What's the best movie you watched in December?
